Announcement of the Death of a Former Student

Good afternoon, this is a message from the Harrison Central School District.  This is Dr. Ruck, Principal speaking. At anytime during this message you may press any number on your keypad to replay this message from the beginning.

Yesterday a 2009 graduate from our school, Marissa Pagli, died tragically on the campus of Manhattanville College.  Marissa was a warm and engaging student who, while at HHS, maintained a demanding course load and a very rigorous extracurricular commitment, and continued this commitment at Manhattanville.

We are all saddened by this tragedy.  A sudden loss like this can cause many strong emotions.  This morning, in their first period classes, teachers shared with their students the importance of speaking with someone about those feelings.   We have recommended that students speak with their parents and share their feelings and concerns about this devastating event.

Students and parents may find it helpful to speak to a counselor, social worker, or school psychologist.  We have arranged to have them available throughout the day, after school and in the evening to talk with students and staff.  Arrangements to seek support can be made at any time.

Our thoughts are with all the students and families touched by this tragedy.

If you have any questions please do not hesitate to call me at 630-3095 or the counseling office at 630-3101.

You may read this message on the Harrison High School website under Important Announcements.

  Thank you.

Cell Phones are prohibited from being used during any type of exam.

Harrison for Haiti

The students of Harrison High School are collecting donations for the victims of the earthquake in Haiti that affected over 3 million people, about one-third of Haiti’s entire population.  The Harrison for Haiti drive will be working to collect money from the residents of the Harrison Community.  Drop boxes will be located in the cafeteria throughout all lunch periods in which we encourage students to donate their spare change.  Larger donations from families can be made in check form and students can deposit these in drop boxes located in the main office.  Checks can be made payable to either Doctors without Borders or Oxfam America.

The drive will conclude on Friday, February 5.

Information on both of these organizations can be found on our website at http://www.harrisoncsd.org/hhs/important_messages.htm

Doctors without Borders

Doctors without Borders (MSF)  is an international medical humanitarian organization created by doctors and journalists in France in 1971, wining the Nobel Peace Prize in 1999. MSF provides independent, impartial assistance to those most in need. MSF has begun to build an inflatable hospital with two operating theaters and 100-bed capacity in an open field not far from the airport. MSF will have this facility operational as soon as possible. In general, supplies are a great concern. MSF teams have used up large quantities of materials and medicines over the past six days and replacing them is proving an immense challenge. Flights into Haiti are still very restricted. A cargo plane due to arrive yesterday with additional stocks was diverted to the Dominican Republic; the roads from there are slow and congested.  MSF has nonetheless been able to bolster its staff on the ground. More than 130 international staff has traveled to the country since the quake. They are reinforcing the remarkable efforts made by teams that were on the ground on January 12, particularly the Haitian staff, many of whom have been working around the clock despite having lost numerous family members and colleagues.  http://doctorswithoutborders.org/

Oxfam America

Oxfam International was formed in 1995 by a group of independent non-governmental organizations. Their aim was to work together for greater impact on the international stage to reduce poverty and injustice.  They deliver immediate life-saving assistance to people affected by natural disasters or conflict, and help to build their resilience to future disasters. As well as becoming a world leader in the delivery of emergency relief, Oxfam International implements long-term development programs in vulnerable communities. Oxfam has a staff of approximately 200 people in Haiti, including a group of highly-experienced emergency specialists. This emergency team is supporting rescue efforts, assessing the damage, and responding with public health, water, and sanitation services to prevent the spread of waterborne disease.  Oxfam will stay after the fact, to help rebuild health and education.   http://www.oxfamamerica.org/

Opening of School Packet for Sophomores, Juniors and Seniors
8/29/09

Good evening, this is a recorded message from the Harrison Central School District on Saturday 8/29/09.  This is Dr. Ruck, Principal of Harrison High School.

This message pertains to the opening of school packets for sophomores, juniors and seniors.  We expected that we should be able to send out the packets, including student schedules, last week but when the schedules were printed it was determined that there were some software issues resulting in schedules that were not accurate.  We are operating with a new software program this year and regrettably the software did not provide the level of accuracy that would allow us to provide accurate schedules for the sophomore, juniors and seniors last week.  The issues have been resolved and we expect that the letters, including the student schedules will go out in Monday’s mail.

Counselors will be available on Wednesday afternoon and all day Thursday should your son or daughter have any questions.

Again, our apologies for the delay.

This message will be available on the high school web site tomorrow.  Have a nice weekend

Spring Break Safety Tips

♦ As soon as you get to your hotel ask the front desk for the number for emergency services, i.e. police or paramedics. These numbers are important in case someone gets alcohol poisoning, a drug overdose or is missing. Make sure all of your friends have these numbers stored in their cell phone or written on a piece of paper.

♦ Remember the signs of alcohol poisoning! Passing out, vomiting, cold/clammy skin and slow/shallow breathing. It is more important to save a friend’s life than worrying about getting into trouble.

♦ Never be alone! Always stay with at least one friend.

♦ Never let your friend(s) go off with a stranger. You don’t have to be a babysitter, but make sure you watch out for each other.

♦ Avoid remote, desolate areas

♦ Always lock your hotel room and car

♦ Never flaunt cash

♦ 2,500 Americans are arrested each year while on spring break. Even if you don’t plan to commit a crime, you might be a victim. Crimes such as theft, assault and rape commonly occur during spring break.

♦ Drinking large amounts of alcohol in combination with activities such as boating, swimming scuba diving, etc. can be harmful. Add to this the sun acting in concert with the alcohol can dehydrate your body causing a more intense, if not dangerous intoxication, possibly alcohol poisoning. Let’s hope hospitals in the Bahamas are as good as those in America.

♦ Remember…mixing alcohol with other drugs is very dangerous. Especially when you are not sure of the potency of the drugs from another country.

Have a fun, but safe spring break!
