Talk about March Madness! The Harrison High School Girls Varsity Basketball team achieved numerous firsts this season - capturing the League Championship for the first time in school history, advancing to their first ever Section 1 Class A Semifinals game at the Westchester County Center, and battled their cross-town rivals from Rye for the Section 1 crown on Saturday, March 3 at Pace University. After an amazing game, the Huskies came up just short of advancing, losing 45-42 to the Garnets. Askley Stagg and Avery LaBarbara were selected All-Tournament. The Huskies shocked the #1 seed from John Jay Cross River on Tuesday, February 27th - winning by a score of 49-41 to advance to the Championship game.
The Huskies advanced to the semis with a defining win against Nanuet on Friday, February 23. Senior Avery LaBarbara scored 24 points and sophomore Ashley Stagg added 11 points. LMK 8th Grader Gabby Marraccini added a spark by contributing 11 points in the 1st half as she came off the bench. In the interview Coach Louis Kail gave to Mike Zacchio of The Journal News, he said "It means a tremendous amount to these kids; to the kids that came before; whenever you turn a program around it takes years. It takes years of kids' commitment to the program over the last eight years, and I think this is the culmination. While there are 11 girls on this team, it's the girls in years past that have laid the framework for this to happen."
The Huskies have been selected as the #4 seed and played their first round Section 1 playoff again Pelham on Friday, February 16th, winning 54-50. Victoria Lendino had an outstanding game for the Huskies with 14 points,12 rebounds and 4 steals. The win was a team effort with key scoring from Ashley Stagg, Gina Nuvoloni, Emily Hassett, and Avery LaBarbera. Mike Smith, sports editor of the Harrison Review wrote in his Twitter post while watching the game, "Some tough, gritty play from Lendino is helping to set the tone here, and LaBarbera seems to come up with a big play any time they need one."
The Harrison Huskies beat Byram Hills 69-54 in the second to the last game of the season to secure the League Championship. Ashley Stagg scored 26 points in the win and Avery LaBarbera added 20 points and Gina Nuvoloni contributed 12 points for the Huskies.
In the final game of the regular season the HHS Girls Varsity Basketball team beat Ardsley 61-46. Senior Avery LaBarbera scored 31 points and snatched 12 rebounds while Ashley Stagg added 15 points. The victory was a direct result of the great defensive effort by the Huskies.
