The Washington Post Challenge Index Ranks Harrison High School #1 in Westchester County

Harrison High School is proud to announce that it has been named once again number #1 in Westchester County, according to The Washington Post Challenge Index.  Published every year since 1998, The Washington Post’s Most Challenging High Schools Index champions the idea of open access of all students into the most rigorous courses, as does the Harrison Central School District. 

To understand the methodology, the Washington Post Challenge Index score is the number of IB or AP college-level tests given at a school in the previous calendar year divided by the number of graduates that year.  The Index also examines a metric they call the Equity and Excellence measure, which shows the percentage of graduates who passed one or more college-level tests during their high school career.

“We are extremely proud of this accomplishment because it recognizes the District’s mission to equity and access,” said Michael Greenfield, Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum and Instruction.  “Moreover, it means that more than 200 graduates challenged themselves by taking college level course work during their four years of high school.”

For the 2015-16 year, Harrison High School offered 28 International Baccalaureate courses and 6 Advanced Placement courses. The Class of 2016 has 91% of its students participating in at least one IB or AP course.  87% of the senior class is enrolled in an IB or AP Math course of study.  IB and AP testing for this year will begin in May. 

Superintendent of Schools, Dr. Louis Wool noted, “We are excited that the Washington Post Challenge Index recognizes that over 90% of our student body is engaged in rigorous coursework and is performing at exemplary levels on externally validated assessments.”
