Two Compete at NYS Indoor Track and Field Championships-Santiago Advances To Nationals

Congratulations to Section 1 Champion junior Ian Santiago who won the Triple Jump event and Mustapha Sarki who placed second in the Long Jump event to advance to the New York State Championships on Saturday, March 4th at The Ocean Breeze Track and Field Facility on Staten Island.  The qualifier and NYS Championship are a combined classification event which means that all athletes in schools from Class AA, A, B, C, and D compete together.  Santiago, who broke his own school record on the way to capturing the Section 1 title, competed at 9:00am on Saturday.  His performance on Saturday moved him from his 14th seed and placed him on the medal podium with a 6th place finish.

As a result of Santiago's jump, his performance has also qualified him for the National Indoor Track and Field Championship to take place on March 10th at the NYC Armory at 6pm. He will be competing against athletes from Connecticut, Idaho, Maryland, New Jersey, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Tennessee, Virginia, Washington and Quebec, Canada.

Senior Mustapha Sarki competed at 11:00am and went from a 31st seed to finish 15th in the state of New York. He set a personal best in the process.

Even though the scores were not high enough to advance to the State Championships, the following Huskies had outstanding results in other events : Ian Santiago also placed fourth in the Long Jump, Ellery Rajagopal finished in fifth place in the 600m, and Gabe Ferreira placed sixth in the 55m hurdles for all of Section 1 Indoor Track and Field athletes.

Go Huskies !!!
