The Harrison High School Varsity Cheerleaders competed at the highly competitive UCA Nationals in Orlando, Florida this past month. Over 900 teams from across the country received bids to Nationals where Harrison competed in the Medium DII division, a division that houses many top 10 teams. Harrison came within a point and a half of advancing to the semifinal round.
“This has been Harrison’s best showing at Nationals to date,” said HHS Cheerleading coach Julia Brefere. “This team has overcome a number of challenges this year and mastered skills that some of the super elite teams don’t have. With all of the hard work this year, both mentally and physically, they believe their dream of getting to the finals can be a reality.”
In Orlando, the Harrison Cheerleaders shared gym space with their Westchester neighbors Maria Regina High School and Eastchester High School and the teams bonded with comradery that was positive and uplifting – coming together and cheering one another on.
“The competition is so fierce,” said Brefere. “There is no room for error in cheerleading and every point counts. We were so close to advancing but we are confident that we will next year. The girls start open gym in May and are coming back with a vengeance!”
