Professional Development
Tuesday June 27, 2017

Colleagues,

This year marks my 12th year leading professional development in Harrison and I couldn’t be more enthusiastic about the 2017-18 program. The depth, breadth and quality of the offerings is extraordinary. We have expanded the number of institutes, workshops and study groups to 27 supplemented by an expansive array of targeted curriculum writing projects. Summer student lab programs continue to evolve including Bridges to Literacy, Writing Academies and a new opportunity for students learning English as a new language. The organization’s commitment to professional learning is one of the unique aspects of our learning community, one to be embraced and celebrated.

As we launch our International Baccalaureate Middle Years Program, secondary teachers will be attending formal IB authorized training and be able to participate in courses and curriculum work aligned to the IB philosophy and instructional framework. Other initiatives continue to receive sustained attention including quality assessment practices and standards referenced reporting, conceptual mathematics, technology integration and coursework leading to Google certification, Next Generation Science Standards, collaborative and co-teaching as well as differentiating instruction for a diverse range of learners.

I’m most proud of the way our professional development program supports sustained, collaborative and job-embedded learning and has expanded opportunities for teacher leadership. In a recent national study by the Frontline Research and Learning Institute (2017), Harrison’s professional learning program was recognized for excellence in these domains.

Attached please find the course catalog for your review and summer planning. I encourage you to carefully consider your department, building and personal goals prior to registration. Last year we had more than 500 registrants, the majority enrolling during the first week of registration. Consistent with past years, we will limit enrollment to three (3) in-service courses/study groups per teacher during the first two weeks of registration. This restriction is designed to ensure that all teachers have an equitable opportunity to enroll in high demand courses.

This year online registration through MyLearningPlan will open on Thursday, May 11th, at 9pm. Please limit your enrollment to three in-service courses until the end of May. Your cooperation is appreciated.

I’d like to express a heartfelt thank you to all of the members of our leadership team, teachers and support staff who collaborated to bring this year’s professional development program to fruition.

Please feel free to contact my office if you have any questions.
