Faculty and
Student Access |
|
Remote file access for faculty and students
is provided by Novell NetStorage which allows
simple Internet-based access to files stored on
the district network. Users can copy, move,
rename, delete, read, modify, and create
documents from any internet enabled computer
through a web browser without the need to
download or install any software. |
|
NetStorage provides file
access only. It cannot allow users to run
programs off the district network. |
Faculty and students can access their files with
the same username and password that they use to
access their school's network. All of the
drive letters that are typically available to
users at school, will be accessible through
their web browser. These include the users
home directory or 'H' drive and 'Teacher' and/
or 'Student' shares.
When working with existing documents, users must
download files to their computer and open them
in their native applications (Word, PowerPoint,
etc) to make changes. Once those changes
are made, the files must be uploaded back
to the district network, so that they will be
accessible at school. |
 |
| As with any Internet-based service, performance
will depend greatly on the available bandwidth
of a user's Internet connection, and the number
of user that are currently using the service.
However, please also bear in mind that
residential broadband connections typically
download files at a much greater rate than they
can upload them: large files can take a long
time to upload regardless of the load on the
system. |

iFolder Users |
iFolder is a Open Source, web based file storage,
synchronization, and sharing solution that is
available to administrators and faculty upon
request . Like Netstorage, files can be accessed
through the internet from most any web browser.
However, unlike NetStorage, iFolder does not
provide direct access to the district network
and it requires the installation of client
software in order to utilize all of its
functions.
With the iFolder client software users can
create new iFolders, or designate existing
folders as iFolders. Files saved in iFolders are
replicated to the iFolder server, and then out
to any users who have been granted access to
that iFolder. The software plugs into the
native file system browser providing an
integrated feel with the operating system and a
familiar look to users. Because of this,
the Windows client software may prompt the user
to download additional .Net related components
from the Microsoft website during the install
process.
Basic iFolder Web Access allows users easily access their iFolders
and files from any computer with access to the
Internet. They can also access shared iFolders
and files that they have accepted from other
users. |
A complete overview of
iFolder along with product documentation can be

iFolder client software is available for the
following operating systems:
Windows,
Macintosh and
Linux. |
