School-Parent Compact for Learning
The Title 1 schools in the Harrison Central School District and the parents of students participating in activities, services, and programs funded by of the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) agree that this compact outlines how school staff, parents and students will share the responsibility for improved academic achievement and the means by which the school and parents will continue to develop a partnership that will help children meet New York State’s Learning Standards.
This school-parent compact is in effect during the 2018-19 school year and will be reviewed annually with stakeholders.
The Title I Schools (Parsons Elementary School, Preston Elementary School, Louis M. Klein Middle School and Harrison High School) will:
Provide high-quality curriculum and instruction in a supportive and effective learning environment that enables participating children to meet the State’s student academic achievement standards. In order to assure achievement of this goal, schools will create comprehensive action plans aligned to the district’s Response to Intervention (RTI) plan and develop personalized instructional learning plans for eligible students. Plans will be implemented by classroom teachers with support from academic intervention specialists, reading teachers and related service providers as required.
School administration will ensure that RTI plans for individual students are implemented with fidelity. They will monitor overall student performance (achievement and growth) at the school, grade and individual classroom level with the goal of increasing the percentage of students scoring at the mastery level and decreasing the number of students scoring below state and local standards. Multiple measures of student learning will be utilized to determine whether students are meeting State learning standards in English Language Arts and mathematics. Data for individual students will be analyzed to determine achievement against comparable students in their school, region and throughout the State. Growth will be measured as an improvement against his/her own prior performance and/or personalized academic goals.
Schools will support students in their educational journey through the following:
- Provide the necessary educational resources including appropriate text books, classroom leveled libraries, access to computers and online resources, etc;
- Annually scheduled parent-teacher conferences during which time this compact will be discussed as it relates to the individual child’s achievement;
- Provide parents with frequent progress reports on their children’s progress. Specifically, elementary schools will provide trimester report cards and conduct two annual parent-teacher conferences. At our secondary schools, parents and students will receive progress reports or report cards every 10 weeks through the Powerschool Parent Portal. The portal also affords students and their parents current access to attendance, grades on classroom assignments, quizzes and exams.
- Supplemental progress monitoring and related reports will be provided for students receiving RTI services. These updates will be provided by classroom teachers and/or intervention service providers.
- Reasonable access to teachers and school administrators. We believe issues related to student learning and/or social-emotional well-being are best handled at the appropriate level. Therefore, any concern related to the classroom is first referred to the classroom teacher. Parents are encouraged to e-mail or phone their child’s teacher with questions about academic performance or other concerns. We work to provide parents a response within 24 hours of any contact.
As parents, we will support our children’s learning in the following ways:
- Promote a “growth mindset” for learning.
- Monitor and promote attendance in school.
- Ensure that homework is completed in a timely manner.
- Monitor amount of television and online activities.
- Participate, as appropriate, in decisions relating to my child’s education.
- Promote positive use of my child’s extracurricular time.
- Stay informed about my child’s education by reading all notifications from the Principal and Superintendent, updates from the Board of Education, the PTA and regularly review the district/school websites for District-wide.
As students, we will share the responsibility to improve our academic achievement by taking ownership of our own learning. Specifically, we will:
- Take responsibility for my learning, attitudes, dispositions and behaviors as a student and member of the school community.
- Come to school ready to learn with a “growth mindset”.
- Complete assigned homework every day and ask for help when I need it.
- Read every day outside of school time.
- Provide my parents or the adult who is responsible for my welfare all notices and information received by me from my school every day.
