CURRICULUM OVERVIEW

The mission of the Harrison Central School District Physical Education Department is to educate minds, develop healthy bodies, and promote positive attitudes towards lifetime physical activity, fitness, and sports skills. With a quality physical education program in place, each student will be empowered with the knowledge and skills necessary to make responsible lifestyle choices that directly impact his/her health and well-being. 

The mission of the Harrison Physical Education and Health Department is to provide a safe learning environment with opportunities to experiment in a physical setting, meet the NYS Learning Standards, embody the districts core values and experience enjoyment from physical activity to empower all students to sustain regular, lifelong physical activity as a foundation for a healthy, productive and fulfilling life.

Elementary K-5: Physical Education & Health

The mission of the Elementary School Physical Education Department of the Harrison CSD is to provide students with a safe and positive environment in which they acquire a foundation of motor and manipulative skills.  Through this process, students will gain confidence in their ability as movers and experience the enjoyment and value that can come from physical activity.  Students will learn how to successfully sustain a physically active lifestyle within the community.

Middle School Grades 6-8: Physical Education & Health

During our students’ middle school grades, (6,7,8), our mission is to create a safe and supportive learning environment. The middle level curriculum offers unique units of instruction that provide diversity and the opportunity for experimentation in physical environment. The physical education staff encourages active, engaged students that embody the district’s core values of caring, respect and responsibility for themselves and others. The department builds on the foundation of motor and manipulative skills introduced at the elementary level. Through a variety of activities, students will apply these skills to real sport and recreational activities to establish and maintain physical fitness, participate in a variety of physical activities and maintain personal health. Focusing on these goals will prepare them to progress to the commencement level.

High School Grades 9-12: Physical Education & Health

The Harrison high school’s physical education department fosters opportunities for enjoyment and positive social interaction in a safe and non-threatening learning environment while introducing fitness based activities. In addition, upon graduation, every student will be trained and certified in First Aid and CPR/AED.

The curriculum is designed to allow all students the opportunity to meet or exceed NYS Learning Standards.  Students will be exposed to a variety of learning experiences in which they will acquire skills necessary to sustain regular, lifelong physical activity. 

At the commencement level, these skills will empower student to make informed choices and critical decisions when creating an individualized path to a healthy and active lifestyle.
