Budget Advances Educational Initiatives for All Students

  • A budget within the allowable tax cap levy limit, the Board has never proposed a levy above the limit
  • Maintenance of District class sizes with a target of 22 students K-12
  • Full-time Health Assistant for middle school
  • Continue to pay fees for International Baccalaureate & Advanced Placement exams for all students
  • Increase psychological services in the middle and elementary school
  • Increase mandated special education teachers and support staff
  • Facility improvements throughout District

 

Tax Levy Below Cap

Since New York State’s adoption of the mandated tax cap, the Harrison Central School District tax levy has been at or below the cap.   The 2020-21 budget proposes a tax levy increase of 2.10%, below the allowable tax levy cap.

Year in Review: Accomplishments, Accolades and Awards

 

Harrison students are thoughtful, learners who bring dedication and an inquisitive drive to all they do. We are pleased to share their achievements:

 

 

Harrison High School was named a Best High School in the country based on rankings from US News and World Report, placing HHS 11th in Westchester County, 37th in New York, and 328th in the nation.

 

The Challenge Index (formerly the Washington Post Index) ranks Harrison High School 3rd in Westchester, 15th in New York, and 246th in the Nation, placing HHS among the top 2% of high schools in the country.

 

Harrison High School was named to Newsweek’s Top 5,000 STEM High Schools for 2020.

 

HHS Senior Aidan Wohl was named a 2020 National YoungArts winners; he is among the nation’s most accomplished young artists in the visual, literary and performing arts.

 

Matthew Cooper was named a National Merit Scholar; Matthew Cooper, Ava Zinman and Josephine Robb were named National Merit Finalists. 

 

HHS Seniors, Sara McSweeney and Nasia Meimeteas, were named Scholars in the prestigious Regeneron Science Talent Search 2020.

 

HHS Students Sara McSweeney and the team of Nellie and Bailey Fisher placed with High Honors (top 50 projects statewide) at the New York State Science and Engineering Fair.

 

The HHS Debate Team posted another impressive year: a six-way co-championship; 6 tournament wins; 6 top speaker awards; 5 bids to the Tournament of Champions; and, 6 invitations to national round robin tournaments.  HHS Senior Ava Zinman is the #1 ranked Lincoln-Douglas debater in the nation.

 

Sara McSweeney and Julia Kindler, both placed 3rd in their respective categories in the Virtual Junior Science and Humanities Symposium (JSHS) State Speaker Competition. This is the highest recognition that any HHS student has achieved in this competition.

 

Harrison students earned three top spots in the Tri-County Science & Technology Fair a highly competitive competition for students from area high schools.: Roya Azar-2nd Place-Biology; Larissa Iraj-3rd Place-Health & Nutrition; Athanasia  Meimeteas-2nd Place-Math/Computers.

 

The LMK Science and Technology Fair showcased students in grades 6-8 who presented the culmination of their research and exploration based on the scientific method or a design and engineering process.

 

HHS Model Congress Team had another successful year winning top awards at the UPenn, and Harvard competitions.

 

Fifty-three HHS students competed at the New York State DECA competition; and, 14 students advanced to the National DECA Competition. HHS teacher and DECA advisor, Joe Santo, received the Outstanding Service Award at the State DECA Conference.

 

Three HHS Seniors Ryuma Nakahata, Kamal Rahman, and Adil Rahman were selected to participate in the White Plains Hospital pre-med program.

 

Harrison High School students performed at the New York State School Music Association (NYSSMA) regional concert: Area All State Mixed Chorus- Alyssa Laurenceau; Area All State Treble Chorus- Paige Pezzella, Ellie Eiff, Lydia LaBelle, Ana Benevente de Abreu; Area All State Orchestra- Kapil Modi, Josh Feldman; Area All State Band- Hannah Karkout.

Harrison High School Seniors exhibited their work at the Young Artists 2020 exhibition at the Katonah Museum of Art, designed to present work of the “next generation of creative thinkers and artists.” Congratulations to our featured artists: Vincent Longo, Marcello Principe, Kristen MacIlvane, Shai Gropper, Devon Smyth, Madison Romero, Christie Byrd, Tina Liu, Gabrielle Bucci, Sydnee Smith.

HHS senior Tyler Burden placed 3rd at the New York City Dance Alliance competition. Tylor plans to double major in dance and science in college.

 Fourteen Harrison students qualified for the NYSSMA All County Music Festival:  Lauren Ugarte, Fjord Deda, Yugo Wakabayashi, Rio Hashimoto, Ran Shigehisa, Isani Mitra, Eriko Goto, Steven Cruz, Juliette Hamlen, Yura Miyazawa, Sienna Paternoster, Riko Suzuki, Kendall Tuffarelli, Leila Ibrahim-Viola.  We are incredibly proud to have so many of our students represent Harrison.

 Harrison High School junior Jessica Leckart’s animated short, “Metamorphic,” was recognized as an Official Selection of the All American High School Film Festival. Her animated short was screened at the film festival’s event held in the AMC Empire Theaters in Times Square. The festival received nearly 2,000 submissions from students in 50 states and more than 40 countries.

Work by three Harrison High School Visual and Digital Arts students Mai Blaustein, Drake Martin, and Leilah El-Azizi, was on display at the StArt Exhibition at the OSILAS Gallery of Concordia College.

Harrison High School students, Katie Cole, Anna Fitzpatrick and Leilah El-Azizi were recognized by the New York State PTA as part of the National PTA’s Reflections Program.  Katie and Anna were recognized in the Photography category, and Leilah’s entry in the Dance Choreography category earned the NYS PTA Award of Excellence in Visual Arts.

 

 

Sports Highlights…..Let’s Go Huskies!

 

The Girls Varsity Swimming Team had an undefeated season and won the Conference Championship this year. Six swimmers qualified for the Section 1 Swimming Championship, and three Long-standing team records were broken. 

 

Casey Judelson was recognized as an All State Football player, named to the LoHud 2019 Westchester Putnam All Star Football Team, and was ranked sixth in Section 1 with 1,172 yards rushing and scored 13 touchdowns.

 

HHS Seniors Josh Cooper and Logan Wasserman were named to the William J. Thom Court of Excellence – the highest academic award in Section 1 Basketball.

 

Jessica Saviano and Deana Giambo were Section 1 Doubles Champions. Deana will attend Marist College, where she will be a member of the women’s tennis team. 

 

Both the Boys and Girls Indoor Track & Field Teams earned the League Championship title. The Boys 4x200 Relay team were State Medalists and Indoor Nationals Qualifiers; and Peter Fischer was an Indoor Nationals Qualifier in the 200m Dash.

 

Joey Harrison scored his 100th career varsity point on January 1st and earned All-League and All Section Honorable Mention.

 

Varsity Baseball players Vinny Corso, Greg Lucien, and Jimmy Horvath committed to play college baseball. Vinny will attend the University of Richmond as a pitcher, Jimmy will play for Washington and Lee University, and Greg will play at Manhattanville College.

 

HHS Softball player, Mia Harris will attend Mercy College and play for the women’s softball team.

 

The Varsity Girls Basketball Team reached the Section Finals for the second time in three years.

 

Tyler Joseph was Westchester County Champion, Section 1 Champion, All-State and became Harrison’s All Time Win Leader at 190 career wins.

 

Harrison athletes earned recognition for excellence:  68 All League, 29 All-Section, 7 All-County, and 7 All-State.
