HCSD's Fine and Performing Arts Department affords all students the opportunity to study music, visual art, dance, and theatre, providing every child with experiences that promote life-long participation and enjoyment of the arts. About HCSD Athletics

The Harrison Athletics program is built on the principles of Rigor, Development, Communication, and Accountability. Harrison coaches work to develop programs based on communication, clear expectations, ongoing feedback, accountability and developing self-advocacy in our student athletes. Learning From Home Experiences

Partnering with families continues to be critically important in educating students across the district. The HCSD Elementary Family University page is designed to enhance the Learning From Home experience. Here, you will discover resources ranging from optimizing your home learning environment to effective instructional strategies in support of your family’s ongoing education.

In this new learning environment, accessing instructional materials through digital platforms is necessary in achieving academic goals. Be mindful of balancing this requirement with that of physical fitness, social interaction, and imaginative play. To the extent possible, provide opportunities for movement breaks, nature walks, and family board games. Below are various resources for you to utilize at home with your child.

Optimizing Your Home Learning Environment:

Teachers thoughtfully design the physical space of their classroom to optimize learning. Each child has a versatile “home base” in their table or desk spot, where all the materials they need for the day are located. They carve out private nooks to minimize distraction for independent work or quiet reading. They invite small groups of students to tables for guided learning experiences and centers focused on skill development. Consider spaces in your home where your child might find a quiet place to read and complete independent activities. Create a permanent location for devices. Designate the kitchen table as a space where the adult and the child may work together. Provide an opportunity for your child to help you define these spaces. When a child owns and understands the purpose of their work spaces, they know what to expect and more efficiently engage in the learning.

Structuring the Day:

All children are different. Some sit down and power through the work of the day in one sitting. Others require movement breaks. All benefit from the stability and predictability of a clearly defined daily schedule. We encourage you to develop a consistent schedule with your child to optimize their productivity and support their individual needs. (videos already on the website K-2, 3-5, secondary)

Screen Time:

There will come a point in the day, where as a parent it is challenging to keep our child(ren) away from the non-school assigned screen time. We have included a curated resource document for K-5 students focusing on appropriate and educational shows on TV, shows on Netflix, and other digital platforms that may be beneficial for your child(ren). We recommend being mindful of not only the amount of time outside of school-assigned screen time your child(ren) is spending on the screen, but also the quality of that screen time. Common Sense Media is a great resource that offers recommendations for age-appropriate movies, TV shows, apps, and games.

Baking/Cooking:

Our kitchens can be our “learning from home” classrooms! Baking or cooking with your child builds reading skills, math concepts, organizational skills, promotes social skills, teaches science, builds vocabulary and provides a time for your child to connect with you in a positive way. We have included a curated resource document for K-5 Baking or cooking experiences.

Building and Creating:

Building and creating have a variety of cognitive and academic benefits for children of all ages. When children engage in activities where they are able to build and create they develop a wide range of skills that help to increase their visual-spatial awareness, problem solve, enhance fine motor capabilities, use reasoning and critical thinking, and helps build their ability to focus and maintain attention. Math is all around us! Math helps children think about how to problem solve and how to think critically about the world around us. The more children engage in conversations about math, the deeper their understanding becomes. These activities will provide our young mathematicians a wide-range of opportunities to deepen their understanding of a variety of mathematical concepts.

Social studies supports our understanding of who we are, where we have come from, the world we live in and those in it. These curated activities and digital platforms involve reading, writing, listening, discussing, “traveling” (sometimes back in time), exploring, and thinking. Engaging in social studies at home provides students with opportunities to connect with their family, community and the world at large.
