Registration for Summer Learning & Enrichment Now Open!
Dear Parents/Guardians:
This summer the Harrison Central School District is offering more than 80 creative and engaging learning opportunities for students designed by Harrison teachers for Harrison students with a focus on strengthening academic readiness, creativity, engagement, and inquiry. These offerings are supported in part by Federal Recovery Act funds.
Summer programs are offered to students entering grades 1 to 12 and grouped into two categories:

Enrichment Programs (open to all students): These programs offer engaging enrichment opportunities designed to enhance skills and content knowledge, explore an interest, and develop peer relationships that will support success in school.

Academic Programs (by invitation): These programs are offered to targeted student groups. Parents of students who are eligible to participate in the academic programs by invitation will be contacted by email with more information. Academic programs by invitation include:

Extension programs for students needing additional academic support in the humanities and mathematics based upon multiple measures of academic readiness

Orientation programs for students who are entering a new school or are enrolling in the IB Diploma Program at Harrison High School

Preparation programs for students entering select IB or AP courses or working on their college essay

English Language Learner programs for students who need support developing proficiency in English

Credit Recovery programs for students who need to retake one or more classes to earn required credits for high school graduation

The District continues to focus on providing a wide range of opportunities to support the intellectual, social and emotional learning of our students. I encourage you to take advantage of the more than 80 learning and enrichment opportunities available to students this summer.

Each child may be enrolled in up to two (2) summer programs (i.e., either two enrichment programs or one academic program and one enrichment program). Enrollment will be available on a first come, first served basis.

Art of Artists (grades 1-4)
Come learn, explore and get inspired by some of the most famous artists around the world! Kusama’s Polka Dot inspired art, Matisse’s Collages, Picasso’s Cubism, and Warhol’s Pop art! We will learn about each artist’s life, perseverance and style through picture books, videos, and virtual exhibits! As a culminating activity, we will create projects based on each artist’s style and end with our very own exhibit!

A Painting Experience (grades 1-6)
Do you love Art? Do you want to explore fun and exciting ways to paint? If you said yes, then A Painting Experience is the perfect camp activity for you! This is a unique twist on summer-time learning that provides you with a creative and fun social ‘bonding’ experience! Your step-by-step journey will take you from a blank canvas, to painting themes and scenes, and even a starry night! Each session will be based on the idea that mistakes make you better, giving you the opportunity to activate a growth mindset and become a happy and confident artist. We will explore that painting requires patience, practice, and positivity as we gain a deeper understanding about color mixing, painting materials, and the history of some very interesting artists.

Creative Creations! (grades 1-2)
Have you ever wondered what you should do with paper towel tubes? egg or milk cartons? or what about the caps from different jars or bottles? In Creative Creations we will use materials that can be recycled to create different projects! We will learn what happens to materials that are recycled and are not recycled. Come explore and create!

Creative Lenses: Photography (grades 1-6)
Let curiosity drive your creativity this week as you learn about and the ins and outs of taking unique pictures and what it means to be a digital citizen. We will use photos as a way to explore a different perspective on the stories we hear, facts we've learned and the social emotional connections around us. Photographers will enhance their communication skills by sharing their ideas, working with others and expressing themselves through this visual medium.

Dazzling Discoveries (grades 1-2)
Sparking wonder and innovation through discovery, this week we’ll explore science, technology, and engineering as we get into the mindset of a creative engineer! Each day will focus on a different inquiry in which students must investigate, create blueprints, explore materials, and build new creations.

Exploring Poetry (grades 1-2)
Let's take a deep dive into poetry! Poetry is all around us and inside of us. In this camp we will explore poetry as readers, writers, thinkers, musicians, and maybe even as dancers! This week we will read poems and, find the rhythm in them with instruments and movement and become inspired as artists. We will also learn to see the world through the eyes of a poet and write our own poems by using our our imaginations, our observation skills, and our poet eyes!

Exploring and Sculpting Hot Air Balloons (grades 1-2)
Have you ever seen a colorful hot air balloon floating in the sky? This week, you will get to design, plan and sculpt a hot air balloon of your very own. Get ready to get your hands messy! We will be using materials like balloons, paper and wet glue to construct our hot air balloons. You will also learn about the science behind how hot air balloons work and fly.

Learning with Play Doh! (grades 1-2)
It's time to play with Play Doh! Together we will read picture books and use Play Doh to help us retell a story using story elements. Each day we will create a Play Doh creation based on a book. We will use a variety of colors and tools to help us. Let's get creative!

Sensational Science (grades 1-2)
Do you want to be a Scientist? Ever wonder how to make a rainbow? or make your own solar oven to make S'mores? During our week at camp we will conduct many hands on experiments together and learn how and why things happen!

The Greatest Show: Circus Arts (grades 1-6)
Circus Arts include a variety of creative and physically challenging elements. It is an opportunity to improve coordination, balance, and overall physical fitness while at the same time drawing on the power of imagination to perform circus elements in new and previously unseen ways. This week we will explore circus arts by developing our physical skills with a variety of circus arts elements, playing circus related games, watching short clips of professional circus artists, creating art related to circus, and reading literature related to circus arts.

Art in the Wild (grades 2-3)
Explore nature in a creative way! We are used to working with crayons, paint, and markers to create art, but there are so many materials available right outside our doors. Let's think outside of the box and gather flowers, leaves, sticks, and more to create some wild artwork!

Dessert Decorating (grades 2-4)
What's better than eating sweet treats? Decorating them! This week we will learn how to decorate cookies, cupcakes and more. We learn the basics of making buttercream designs including how to mix colors and make simple flowers and decorations. We will also work with fondant to create beautiful designs. During this camp we will practice icing and fondant designs, designing our treats, and decorating them. *We will be working with dairy and gluten but we will be nut-free.

Tinker Club (grades 2-3)
IDo you know what a Brain Flake is? Well either way, consider joining the Tinker Club! In this club you will work with Brain Flakes to design and build 3D objects! Together, we will learn all about how to be engineers, how to follow the design cycle, how to create colorful masterpieces and to reflect on our work!

French Enrichment Through Cultural Exploration (grades 3-5)
The French Enrichment Through Cultural Exploration Camp would expose upper elementary students to the French speaking world and Francophone cultures through engaging, interactive activities. Through a variety of activities, this campy will provide fun ways to explore French language and culture.

Italian Enrichment Through Cultural Exploration (grades 3-5)
The Italian Enrichment Through Cultural Exploration Camp is designed to encourage you to speak Italian by immersing yourself in the language and culture. You will participate in Italian themed activities including; singing, cooking, completing art projects, and playing both indoor and outdoor games.

Karaoke: Reading in the Spotlight (grades 3-4)
Do you love to sing along when listening to your favorite songs? Karaoke gives music-lovers an opportunity to use their reading skills to put on an epic performance! This week we will dive into the techniques needed for healthy singing and explore reading in a new way through the lyrics of some of our favorite songs. Get ready to improve vocabulary, pronunciation, and comprehension because the karaoke stage awaits!

Lego Laboratory (grades 3-4)
LEGO's are SO much more than plastic pieces. In the Lego Laboratory we will explore the history of LEGO's and learn about how they came to be one of the most popular items in toy stores around the world. Be a Scientist! (grades 4-6)
Ever wonder WHY? Why is the sky blue or why the ocean is salty? If you're asking yourself these questions, you are thinking like a scientist! Scientists explore and discover ideas to ask and answer questions. This week scientists will learn about the materials scientists utilize, the scientific process and will conduct various experiments around the topics of electricity, magnetism, plants and motion!

Build Your Own Treehouse (grades 4-6)
Have you ever dreamed about building your own treehouse? Imagine the hours you could spend in there, hanging out among the trees. This week we will talk about what goes into building our own treehouses and build a 3D model of what our dream treehouses would look like. Greek Gods Galore! (grades 5-6)
Greek mythology plays a huge role in our world today. From our language, to symbols, to books and movies. Greek myths were created to explain the unexplainable in our world long ago. Students participating in this workshops will get the chance to explore some of these myths through Reader's Theater and creatively develop some of their own stories that explain why things happen today!

Homemade Creations (grades 5-6)
Homemade creations is designed to build an appreciation and understanding of the process, culture, and science of homemade pasta making. We will focus on food science and learn the process of making homemade pasta. We will even learn how to make fresh pasta sauces. This course is designed to not only learn how to cook, but also to bring people together with the charm of gathering around a table.

Sweet Eats! (grades 5-6)
Did you know that skills from the classroom can make you a more successful baker? Baking requires precise measurements, an understanding of interactions between ingredients, and an ability to navigate a kitchen. This week we will hone our baking skills, explore the history of popular treats, delve into the purpose of different ingredients and use math and science to halve and double recipes. Of course we will also get to enjoy our tasty creations! *Please note that recipes will include dairy and gluten

Watercolor Workshop (grades 5-6)
Do you love to paint? Are you interested in moving beyond the basics learned during the school year? This week we will begin by creating a drawing from a still life (objects set up in the art room), or other subject matter of choice, and then explore some more advanced watercolor painting techniques. You’ll have time to practice and then apply the watercolor techniques you’ve learned to complete your watercolor painting.

Explorations in the Digital Arts (grades 6-8)
Are you ready to release your creativity, sharpen your technical skills, and develop your talents in the digital arts! In this workshop, students will explore photography, videography, graphic design, and digital illustration through self-chosen designs. Students will work with DSLR cameras, Adobe Creative Cloud software (Photoshop, Illustrator, Premiere, etc.) and other online tools in our digital arts lab.

Rockets (grades 6-7)
Do you marvel at humankind’s achievements in space? When you look at the Moon, do you wonder at the ingenuity that took us there? Have you been following the SpaceX mission to Mars? Rockets play a critical role in all that we achieve in space exploration. We invite you to become aerospace engineers to design, build, and evaluate your own rockets. There's no thrill like launching a rocket, watching it streak across the sky, reach peak altitude, and then return gently to earth. Come explore with us! Returning student rocketeers will build and launch more complex rockets.

Bridges to Learning
The Bridges Program is designed to reinforce elementary literacy and mathematics skills. During this 15 day experience, children will learn strategies that are specific to their needs while targeting prioritized grade level skills. Students will experience small group and individualized instruction developed to leverage critical thinking and problem solving strategies in preparation for the fall.

Orientation
6th Grade Student Orientation
The Grade 6 Orientation is for entering 6th grade students in preparation for their transition to LMK. The day's events include (1) an introduction to school counselors and building administrators (2) a class schedule review (3) time to explore the building and (4) time to meet with other 6th grade students from Preston, Parsons, Purchase, and Harrison Avenue before the first day of school.

Elementary ENL Program
English Language Learners entering grades 1-5 who need to strengthen their literacy skills while continuing their exposure to the English language are identified by their ENL teachers for participation in the program. Using a thematic approach, students engage in a variety of literacy activities and hands-on experiences that allow them to acquire academic vocabulary, internalize grammatical structures, and practice using the English language in the four modalities of Listening, Speaking, Reading and Writing.

ENL Jumpstart Program
English Language Learners entering grades 3-6 who arrive late in the spring or during the summer months with very limited ability to understand the English language are invited to participate in these programs to develop basic interpersonal language skills that will enable them to ease their social and academic transition into the classroom. Following a formal screening, students are identified and invited to participate in the program by their ENL teachers.

Do you marvel at humankind’s achievements in space? When you look at the Moon, do you wonder at the ingenuity that took us there? Have you been following the SpaceX mission to Mars? Rockets play a critical role in all that we achieve in space exploration. We invite you to become aerospace engineers to design, build, and evaluate your own rockets. There's no thrill like launching a rocket, watching it streak across the sky, reach peak altitude, and then return gently to earth. Come explore with us! Launching into Problem Solving (grades 7-9)
In this workshop, students will explore the use of science, technology, engineering and math through problem solving. Through this inquiry-based learning experience, students experience stem hands-on. Students will bring knowledge and skills to solve problems, make sense of information, and know how to gather and evaluate evidence to make decisions. Students will work on activities like designing a balloon-powered car, creating their own slime, dropping parachutes to test air resistance, and designing a craft stick bridge.

During this week-long enrichment course, students will embody mathematics through various activities designed to keep the mind and body in motion. Students will compose short dance pieces using mathematical ideas, explore geometry in the body and in movement patterns, and relate dance notation to algebra. Students will utilize their creativity to explore the mathematics of movement.

This course will have a large focus on the mind body connection, finding happiness through movement and finding healthy activities that bring you joy. We would discuss leading a balanced lifestyle and what that looks like for a middle schooler; maintaining healthy relationships with family and friends,building a positive self-esteem,keeping up with their academics and extracurricular activities, making healthy choices that contribute to overall wellness (diet, sleep, movement), establishing media balance, making time for the things they enjoy.

Jazz Dance (grades 9-12)
In this workshop, students will focus on technique and choreography in the style of Jazz Dance. Students will warm up together, learn and perform steps, jumps and turns. In addition, choreography will be taught to popular music while students explore different genres of jazz dance (lyrical jazz, street jazz and broadway jazz). Are you interested in becoming physically and mentally active through outdoor adventures? In this workshop, students will have the opportunity to engage in outdoor education, nurturing them to become more responsible and considerate global citizens while supporting their personal growth, social awareness and life skills development. Participants will engage in adventure-based projects and activities including orienteering, environmental ethics, high and low ropes courses, and hiking. Each experience will be analyzed by students through a cognitive coaching lens to support effective leadership and group dynamic skills.

In this course, students will explore and review topics in precalculus as they prepare to enter an AP Calculus course their junior year. New Student Orientation: Grades 10-12
The HHS New Student Orientation is for entering 10th-12th grade students in preparation for their transition to HHS. The day's events include (1) an introduction to school counselors and building administrators (2) a class schedule review (3) time to explore the building (4) time to address questions including the schedule and (5) time to meet with other new students before the first day of school.

IB Diploma Programme Orientation
This orientation is for juniors entering the full IB Diploma Program as Diploma Candidates. Students will be given an overview of the program and introduced to the academic expectations. Information will be provided on two of the core requirements, the Extended Essay (EE) and Creativity, Activity, and Service (CAS).

Preparation
IB Language and Literature Jumpstart Program Year 1
In this 4 day workshop, students will begin examining the components of the IB Language and Literature course. The focus will be on a close examination of non-literary texts such as music or art work.

IB Language and Literature Jumpstart Program Year 2
The goal of the “IB Year 2 Boot Camp” is for your child to discuss and develop the skills they will need for success in high school, in college, and beyond. This workshop will allow students to establish bonds with their peers that will promote collaboration in the classroom while building the skills needed to meet success on the IB Yr2 Assessments. In addition, students will work with teachers to share and expand their knowledge of IB Language & Literature so they can enter into the upcoming school year with new ideas and perspectives.

IB Extended Essay Workshop
In this workshop, senior Diploma Candidates will be given guidance on the construction of essays with an emphasis on research methods used within subject disciplines. Feedback will be provided on designs of experimental approaches and logical construction of essay arguments.

This IB Economics workshop is intended to help students develop and use the skills, practices, and methods employed by economists while exploring the topic of supply and demand and under what conditions price can effectively allocate resources. Students are encouraged to attend all workshops but may register for as few as one.

AP World Institute
The AP World Institute is intended to help students develop and use the same skills, practices, and methods employed by historians and to prepare for their first AP experience. The two-day institute is designed in four discrete sessions, each exploring different topics and skills that are central to the AP World History curriculum. Developing arguments will help student design strong thesis statements. Students are encouraged to attend all sessions but may register for as few as one or any combination that best suits their needs.

College Essay Workshop
In this workshop, seniors will begin crafting their college essays as part of the college application process. Steps will include identifying a focus, developing ideas, and refining prose. Teachers will lead small group sessions, share writing strategies, and provide personalized feedback to each student.

ENL Summer Writing Academy
The 6-10 ENL Writing Academy program is geared towards developing students’ writing and inquiry-based research skills. The course is differentiated based on grades and proficiency levels. This program is by invitation only.

ENL Jumpstart Program
Our Jumpstart Program is designed for English Language Learners entering grades 11-12 who arrive late in the spring or during the summer months with very limited ability to understand the English language. The program aims to develop basic interpersonal language skills that will enable students to ease their social and academic transition into the classroom. This program is by invitation only.

HHS Summer School
Summer school is an opportunity for students who were not successful in one or more of their classes to strengthen skills and earn course credit, which will help to ensure that students remain on track to graduate with their class. Summer School classes will include (subject to enrollment):
