2021 Summer Learning & Enrichment Preview
Dear Parents/Guardians:
This summer the Harrison Central School District is offering a wide range of creative and engaging learning opportunities for students to address challenges faced this past year and prepare them to thrive in the coming school year. The District will offer summer learning and enrichment opportunities designed by Harrison teachers for Harrison students with a focus on strengthening academic readiness, creativity, engagement, and inquiry. These offerings are supported in part by Federal Recovery Act funds.
Summer programs are offered to students entering grades 1 to 12 and grouped into two categories:

Enrichment Programs (open to all students): These programs offer engaging enrichment opportunities designed to enhance skills and content knowledge, explore an interest, and develop peer relationships that will support success in school.

Academic Programs (by invitation): These programs are offered to targeted student groups. Parents of students who are eligible to participate in the academic programs by invitation will be contacted by email with more information. Academic programs by invitation include:

Extension programs for students needing additional academic support in the humanities and mathematics based upon multiple measures of academic readiness

Orientation programs for students who are entering a new school or are enrolling in the IB Diploma Program at Harrison High School

Preparation programs for students entering select IB or AP courses or working on their college essay

English Language Learner programs for students who need support developing proficiency in English

Credit Recovery programs for students who need to retake one or more classes to earn required credits for high school graduation

On Friday, May 14, the registration links for these programs will be activated. Each child may be enrolled in up to two (2) summer programs (i.e., either two enrichment programs or one academic program and one enrichment program). Enrollment will be available on a first come, first served basis.
The District continues to focus on providing a wide range of opportunities to support the intellectual, social and emotional learning of our students. I encourage you to take advantage of the more than 80 learning and enrichment opportunities available to students this summer.

Authors & Artists! An Adventure with Eric Carle (grades 1-2)
In this class we will learn about how Eric Carle made his famous illustrations in one of his children’s books We will use his art technique to make our very own collage illustrations! Along with creating our own collage illustrations we will write our own story to match! This week we will learn how Eric Carle creates his beautiful illustrations and develops his stories!

Home Sweet Habitat! (grades 1-2)
Home Sweet Habitat! Deepen your understanding of how nature works. Discover how animals and plants are connected to their environment in a fascinating web of life. We will race around the world and engage in a variety of hands-on activities, games, crafts, stories and songs to explore animals and the many, unique habitats of our wonderful planet. Campers will put learning into action by designing their very own habitat.

Who is Buzz without Woody? Who is Elsa without Anna? Who is Tigger without Pooh? Being a good friend is one of the most important qualities a person can have. Empathy, compassion and kindness make all the difference when it comes to life and feeling good about oneself. This week we will explore all different ideas surrounding the theme of friendship. From interactive read alouds, to crafts and activities, we will deepen our understanding of friendship and apply what we learn to our daily lives.

Growing Gardeners (grades 1-3)
Have you always wanted to grow a garden? Here’s your opportunity! This week we will explore the life cycle of plants through books, songs, poems, and art! We will try out some “farm to table” recipes from plants we grow and learn new skills including: responsibility, understanding cause and effect, and building self-confidence. The Art of Origami (grades 1-3)
Are you ready to learn with your hands? Come join us to learn the ancient art of Origami, the practice of turning a simple sheet of paper into a finished animated sculpture! Make and decorate your own paper airplane to see whose can fly the farthest (and look the coolest!). In just a few short days you'll not only find out just how to turn paper into art, but the history behind it.

A Painting Experience (grades 1-4)
Do you love Art? Do you want to explore fun and exciting ways to paint? If you said yes, then Paint with Mr. Amico is the perfect camp activity for you! Paint with Mr. Amico is a unique twist on summer-time learning, that provides you with a creative and fun social ‘bonding’ experience! Your step-by-step journey will take you from a blank canvas, to a completed piece. Painting themes and scenes, and even a starry night! Each Section will be based on the idea that mistakes make you better, in turn giving you the opportunity to activate a growth mindset, becoming an accomplished, happy and confident artist. We will explore that painting requires patience, practice, and positivity as we gain a deeper understanding about color mixing, painting materials, and the history of some very cool artists. Come paint with me and let your imagination run wild!

The Greatest Show: Circus Arts (grades 1-6)
Circus Arts include a variety of creative and physically challenging elements. It is an opportunity to improve coordination, balance, and overall physical fitness while at the same time drawing on the power of imagination to perform circus elements in new and previously unseen ways. This week we will explore the history and science of circus arts, learn about some famous circuses, and develop our skills with a variety of circus elements.

Elephant and Piggle Fitness (grades 2-3)
Do you love the Elephant and Piggie books? Then come join us for four days of fun and excitement looking at how Mo Willems books help us to keep our body healthy and fit. Each day we will dig deep into one book. We will read them and find how they connect to our own lives. We will focus on the whole self, exploring a healthy mind and body.

Lego Laboratory (grades 2-3)
LEGO's are SO more than plastic pieces. In the Lego Laboratory we will explore the history of LEGO's and learn about how they came to be one of the most popular items in toy stores around the world. Slime Time (grades 3-4)
It’s a bird! It’s a plane! It’s Oobleck! Do you LOVE slime?! This week we will investigate a strange substance called Oobleck. We will follow the scientific method to research types of matter and their properties, hypothesize, create and test our ideas, then analyze the results to draw conclusions. Join us in creating and manipulating this mysterious substance, while having fun and getting our hands dirty!

Reading Ambassador Program (grades 3-5)
Are you interested in becoming a part of a larger community of readers? Do you want to promote reading as a "reading ambassador". In this program, students will share and discover great books among readers all over the world. Ultimately, participants will become reading ambassadors for their own school library, featuring the best books for their peers to read.

Be a Pop-Up Book Author (grades 3-5)
Did you ever read a pop-up book? These are fun and exciting books to read with three-dimensional illustrations. These books are not only enjoyable to read, but are fun to make. This week we will learn about the history of where books came from and how they are made. We will explore pop-up books and create our own pop-up books on topics of interest that we research!

Does the sound of the ice cream truck bell ringing bring a smile to your face? Then this camp is for you. We will explore what it takes to run our own ice cream truck business. We will have fun picking out flavors, surveying our friends and family, and using our awesome math skills to create our business and make some ice cream. Yum!

Becoming an Engineer (grades 3-6)
Engineers want to know how and why things work. We will learn how to think like engineers, and will use science and math to solve problems! We will design, build and test things. We will think flexibly when redesigning initial models to create even better solutions. This week we will design a model bridge, a propeller car, and a tiny robot!

Lego Masterminds is a junior version of the wildly popular TV show, Lego Masters. Develop your skills in Teamwork, Creativity, Perseverance & Problem Solving Each day learn a piece of history about the Lego company, watch master builds, complete mini challenges and team up for a large secret themed build challenge.

Calligraphy Camp (grades 4-6)
It’s time to loop back in style with cursive! In a world where we are constantly typing or texting, it’s easy to forget about cursive handwriting. This skill is not only necessary but it can also be seen as creative and artistic! During your week at Cursive Camp you will start by practicing common strokes and forming letters. We will gradually build your skill set to connect letters and create words and sentences. Whether you are a beginner or interested in perfecting your craft, Cursive Camp will give you the tools you need to use cursive in your everyday writing.

Happiness Bootcamp (grades 4-6)
Did you know that we can learn to be happier? Just like we learn to ride a bike or read a book, we can learn strategies to build our happiness skills. This week we will explore the science of happiness and how to feel, think and act happier. Through fun group lessons and physical activities our happiness will grow. Furthermore, we will learn to create ripple effects so that our work creates a happier community for us all. Physical activities will be used to complement and support the lessons. Sneakers and comfortable clothing are required.

S.T.E.AM. in Color (grades 4-6)
Summer is full of exciting and vibrant colors, so why not think about S.T.E.A.M. in color as well? S.T.E.A.M. stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Mathematics. This week we will explore these areas in exciting and colorful ways. We will gain background knowledge about S.T.E.A.M. through reading various articles, conducting experiments, and learning the why and how certain things happen when substances interact.

Harry Potter Wizarding STEAM (grades 4-6)
Calling all aspiring wizards! Join Harry Potter Wizarding STEAM camp to be swept away to the magical world of Hogwarts where we will practice our wizarding skills through science, technology, engineering, art and MAGIC! Students will be sorted into their Hogwarts house, learn how to cast spells, create potions, and even play quidditch! We are excited to delve into this magical camp together.

Tour of Italy (grades 4-6)
Do you love to travel? Join me on a tour of Italy! We will begin our tour in Taranto where we will dance the Tarantella. Next, we will head north to explore the unique city of Venice where we will learn about Carnivale and decorate our own masks! Our last stop will be in the city of Vinci, a town famous for the artist Leonardo da Vinci. His version of the parachute will be built as a STEM activity. Throughout our time together we will be learning some Italian vocabulary and conversational phrases. Vieni con me!

Mummy Masters (grades 4-6)
Are you ready to become Harrison’s newest archaeologists? In ancient Egypt, the people honored the dead by mummifying them. Come learn about the science and history behind one of the most impressive ancient civilizations by digging deep into their crypts. This week we will explore how the ancient Egyptians mummified people, why they did this, learn about one of the most famous ones, and even create our own mummies!

Hamilton's History (grades 5-6)
The Broadway musical Hamilton has introduced fans around the world to life during the American Revolution. Throughout this week students will build connections between the musical Hamilton and the events leading up to the Revolution. Students will have the opportunity to engage in theater games and write their own scripts, raps or musical numbers about this important time in our nation's history.

Greek Gods Galore! (grades 5-6)
Greek mythology plays a huge role in our world today. From our language, to symbols, to books and movies. Greek myths were created to explain the unexplainable in our world long ago. Students participating in this workshops will get the chance to explore some of these myths through Reader's Theater and creatively develop some of their own stories that explain why things happen today!

Sweet Eats! (grades 5-6)
Did you know that skills from the classroom can make you a more successful baker? Baking requires precise measurements, an understanding of interactions between ingredients, and an ability to navigate a kitchen. This week we will hone our baking skills, explore the history of popular treats, delve into the purpose of different ingredients and use math and science to halve and double recipes. Of course we will also get to enjoy our tasty creations!

Watercolor Workshop (grades 5-6)
Do you love to paint? Are you interested in moving beyond the basics learned during the school year? This week we will begin by creating a drawing from a still life (objects set up in the art room) and then explore some more advanced watercolor painting techniques. You'll have time to practice and then apply the watercolor techniques you've learned to complete your watercolor painting.

Strategies, Tips and Fun: Getting the Most out of Playing Games (grades 5-6)
Games have been a way to form bonds with family members and friends for hundreds of years. Playing games in person with another player can be exciting and challenging. It can be rewarding to challenge a player and win. In this workshop you will read about the history of games, learn strategies t o win and learn how being a team player is just as important as winning.

Disney Magic: A Ride Through Disney (grades 5-6)
Calling all Disney and theme park lovers! Come spend a week with me taking a sneak peak into the world of imagineering and what goes on behind the scenes of building an amusement park ride. This week you will have the opportunity to explore what it means to be an imagineer, dive into some history and science about Disney theme park rides, as well as create plans for your own ride. Secret Superfood Swaps (grades 5-6)
Can you keep a secret? So can I! Join me in discovering secret ingredient swaps creating delicious recipes filled with creativity. We will learn about food science and taste test new ingredients along the way. Can you make ice-cream without cream or pancakes without flour? Let's find out! We'll explore new tastes and techniques with both sweet & savory recipes. This menu is open to all creative palates including those who are avoiding gluten and dairy.

Be a Scientist! (grades 5-6)
Ever wonder WHY? Why is the sky blue or why the ocean is salty? If you're asking yourself these questions, you are thinking like a scientist! Scientists explore and discover ideas to ask and answer questions. This week scientists will learn about the materials scientists utilize, the scientific process and will conduct various experiments around the topics of electricity, magnetism, plants and motion!

Elementary ENL Program
English Language Learners entering grades 1-5 who need to strengthen their literacy skills while continuing their exposure to the English language are identified by their ENL teachers for participation in the program. Did you know that scientists and engineers often use math while discovering and designing? The organization of The Solar System is just one example of this. In this workshop, students will explore the use of ratios and proportions to create a scale drawing of our solar system. Through inquiry and hands-on experiences, students will practice measurement, unit conversion, and calculating scale. Using problem solving skills, students will then reflect on the size of the planets and moons in our solar system, using what they have learned to design a realistic to-scale art piece (drawing, painting, poster, mural) of The Solar System. Empathic Explorations: An Inquiry into What Matters to Me and Why (grades 7-10)
What is my role as a global citizen? How can I use my voice to bring about awareness and change? In this four-day workshop, students will uncover “what it is” they care about, formulate an understanding as to “why it is they care,” and encourage others to do the same. Using the IB Learner Profile as an anchor for this work, students will engage in the inquiry process, formulate questions around topics of their choosing, and uncover a global perspective to share with an audience of their peers.

In this workshop, students will have the opportunity to engage in outdoor education, nurturing them to become more responsible and considerate global citizens while supporting their personal growth, social awareness and life skills development. Participants will engage in adventure-based projects and activities including orienteering, environmental ethics, high and low ropes courses, and hiking. Each experience will be analyzed by students through a cognitive coaching lens to support effective leadership and group dynamic skills.

In this four-day workshop, students will uncover “what it is” they care about, formulate an understanding as to “why it is they care,” and encourage others to do the same. Using the IB Learner Profile as an anchor for this work, students will engage in the inquiry process, formulate questions around topics of their choosing, and uncover a global perspective to share with an audience of their peers.

Outdoor Adventure (grades 9-12)
Are you interested in becoming physically and mentally active through outdoor adventures? In this workshop, students will have the opportunity to engage in outdoor education, nurturing them to become more responsible and considerate global citizens while supporting their personal growth, social awareness and life skills development. Participants will engage in adventure-based projects and activities including orienteering, environmental ethics, high and low ropes courses, and hiking. Each experience will be analyzed by students through a cognitive coaching lens to support effective leadership and group dynamic skills.

Grade 9 Humanities Extension
This Humanities workshop will reinforce literacy skills in preparation for grade 9 ELA & Social Studies. Students will work in small groups, individually and with the teacher to develop critical reading skills as they closely read and analyze a variety of texts. The course will focus on engaging topics such as video games that will encourage students to ask conceptual questions and participate in project-based assessments.

AP World Institute
The AP World Institute is intended to help students develop and use the same skills, practices, and methods employed by historians and to prepare for their first AP experience. The two-day institute is designed in four discrete sessions, each exploring different topics and skills that are central to the AP World History curriculum. Developing arguments will help student design strong thesis statements. Students are encouraged to attend all sessions but may register for as few as one or any combination that best suits their needs.

Secondary ENL Program
This program is for entering 6-10th grade English Language Learners who need to further develop their writing and speaking skills. Teachers nominate students who have struggled in these areas during the year to be the primary participants in the program.This Offering focuses around the inquiry process to help students refine their research skills using noodletools to track their research and sources from our library databases. Students select their own topics based on issues around the world and use this content to develop written pieces that are then presented to a committee of peers and parents.

ENL Jumpstart Program
English Language Learners entering grades 7-12 who arrive late in the spring or during the summer months with very limited ability to understand the English language are invited to participate in these programs to develop basic interpersonal language skills that will enable them to ease their social and academic transition into the classroom. Following a formal screening, students are identified and invited to participate in the program by their ENL teachers.
