March 24: LMK Principal's Message

Dear LMK Parent/Guardian,

I hope your family is safe and well. We are all adjusting to the challenges of Learning From Home. My deepest thanks for your partnership, it has helped make these first days successful for our students. Each teacher has presented daily lessons and is in ongoing communication with their classes and individual students.  Students have been sharing their work and receiving feedback from teachers.  One of the best ways you can support your child is by establishing a schedule for study, exercise, and play. A balanced day and a balanced diet will support students to maintain good health during these stressful times.

Teachers have and will continue to flexibly schedule meeting times to support individual students using google Meet or Hangouts, and answer student questions via email. Your child’s social and emotional health is as important as their academic studies. Our support staff of counselors and psychologists is available to answer questions and respond to concerns. At times, teachers, counselors and psychologists will be engaged in planning or teaming with colleagues, so please help your child understand that sometimes a response may take a little bit longer. We regularly monitor students' work production and the amount of time they are interacting with us. It is important that students log in each day to access their classes.  If your child is finding it is difficult to log on or complete work, please let us know immediately. We will identify the problem and support your child’s success.

I would like to address concerns that have been asked about upcoming events:

  • New York State Assessments, (grades 3-8) in ELA and Math have been canceled.  Presently the Algebra I Regents is still scheduled to be administered in June. We will continue to monitor and alert you of any changes.

  • Buddy Day for 5th and 6th graders will be rescheduled at a date to be determined.

  • Our trip to The Museum of the Moving Image in May is on hold, as are all school field trips.

  • Modified sports are on hold, we hope upon a schedule will be put in place countywide upon our return.

  • Moving Up is scheduled for June 25th, we will send more information about this celebration soon.

This is a new and challenging time for all of us, I would like to share positive experiences from students and faculty:

  • Student:  “I thought the day went well, but I do wish I was in school.”

  • Teacher: “I was able to work with a student and connect to his parents. Together, we partnered in his work.”

  • Students developed flip grid video responses in math class

  • Teachers organized Google Hangouts with students to refine their learning and provide support, enrichment and to stay connected.

I will continue to send an email to students each day to monitor their learning and well-being. Each Tuesday I will share an update with you about any LMK news.  Please know I am here to support you and do not hesitate to reach out with any questions you may have.

Sincerely yours,

Scott Fried
