May 5: HHS Principal's Message

Dear HHS Families,

What a beautiful weekend!  I hope everyone was able to get out and bask in the sunshine.  As we begin this 8th week of remote learning, most of you are aware of the governor’s announcement that school is closed for the remainder of the year. We will finish the year with distance learning.  While disappointing, the safety of your children always comes first.  However, I am sure you agree - it was difficult to hear.

Since the announcement, I have received many emails and some calls from students and parents asking questions or proposing ideas for gatherings and ceremonies like graduation.   We will alert you of plans for celebrating school events as soon as possible.  Many ideas are being researched and considered, and the voice and ideas of our students inform our thinking.  As the Superintendent has assured, “We will find a way to fulfill the promise of concluding this year by filling it with memories both positive and unique.”

Many students have shared frustrations about being overwhelmed by overlapping due dates for major assessments in multiple courses.  In response, we are tracking assignments by grade level to manage due dates and avoid overlap.  The assignment schedule will be adjusted.

Even in the environment of remote learning, our high school is a busy place:

  • Congratulations to the 2019-2020 National Honor Society Inductees!  Please watch for an upcoming communication regarding the scheduling of an induction ceremony for Seniors prior to the end of the school year.  We will celebrate with a ceremony of Junior inductees next Fall.
  • Juniors will be notified about our “College Bound” sessions with counselors.  As in past years, Juniors will meet with counselors in small groups to begin the college process. The only difference students will notice from previous years is this year’s College Bound will be held virtually!
  • Students enrolled in Advanced Placement classes, the upcoming AP Exam dates are:
    • Calculus BC, May 12th @ 2pm
    • Computer Science A May 15th @ 4pm
    • World History, May 21st @ 2pm
    • Statistics, May 22nd @ 2pm
  • Review the HHS Weekly Bulletin, Week of 5/4/2020 which includes important information, announcements, and deadlines.

I have always known our class of 2020 was special and should be recognized in a unique way that distinguishes them, never did I realize how unique or distinguished they would be from all classes before or going forward.  We all have absorbed a great deal of change in a small window of time, but know that all of our thoughts, focus, and planning is on celebrating your children.

Missing your children,

Ms. Kimberly Beukema
Principal
