Application for Salary Advancement

As you prepare to submit an application for salary advancement, be sure to read this FAQ and provide all of the required information.  Please note that applications with incomplete or inaccurate information will slow down the application for salary advancement process.

What are the different salary lanes and how often can I apply to move to the next lane?

The salary lanes are as follows: BA, MA, MA+15, MA+30, MA+45, MA+60, MA+75, PhD.  A teacher can apply for salary advancement no more than once every two years (example: a teacher who moved to MA+15 on 9/1/17 cannot apply to move to MA+30 before 9/1/19).

When can I submit my salary lane advancement application?

Applications for salary advancement are processed two times per year: September 1st and February 1st. If all courses to be applied to the lane change are completed before September 1st, teachers can submit the application for salary advancement and all supporting documentation as soon as the courses are completed, but no later than October 15th. The salary lane change will be retroactive to September 1st. If all courses to be applied to the lane change are completed before February 1st, teachers can submit the application for salary advancement and all supporting documentation as soon as the courses are completed, but no later than February 28th. The salary lane change will be retroactive to February 1st.

How are seat time hours converted to credits?

Fifteen (15) hours of seat time equal one (1) credit.  Graduate courses that meet for at least forty-five (45) hours are awarded three (3) credits.  No partial credit is awarded for salary lane change purposes.

What proof is required to verify that a course has been completed?

When a course is completed, the teacher must mark the course completed in MyLearningPlan and then make sure that acceptable proof of completion is provided to the Office of Human Resources.  Acceptable proof of completion includes:

  • Graduate credits: An official, sealed transcript from the issuing university
  • HCSD In-Service Credits: Verification provided by the Office of Curriculum & Instruction to the Office of Human Resources (no action required by the teacher)
  • Other In-Service Credits: For in-service credits taken outside of Harrison, the teacher must submit an original certificate of completion provided by the workshop provider, which includes the teacher's name, the name of the course, the number of seat-time hours, and a signature from the provider.  An unsigned certificate of completion may require additional authentication.

How many credits are required for a salary lane change?

Salary lane changes require fifteen (15) credits. Teachers can apply for a salary lane change with the following combinations graduate and/or in-service credits:

  • All 15 credits can be graduate credits
  • All 15 credits can be in-service credits if they are all offered by HCSD
  • All 15 credits can be any combination of graduate credits and in-service credits offered by HCSD
  • If any in-service credits were taken outside of Harrison, then at least 9 of the 15 credits applied to the salary lane change must be graduate credits

Examples of credit combinations that qualify for a salary lane change include, but are not limited to:

What are the steps I should follow to submit an Application for Salary Advancement?

Make sure you have done each of the following to submit an application for salary advancement:

  1. Confirm that at least two (2) years have passed since your last salary lane change. If you are unsure of when your last salary lane change occurred, contact the Office of Human Resources.
  2. Review MyLearningPlan to make sure that all of the courses listed on MLP that you plan to apply toward the salary lane change are marked “complete” by you. The Office of Human Resources will then mark the course "complete" when the certificate of completion (for in-service courses) or the official transcript (for graduate courses) is received.  In MLP click the "Salary Advancement" tab to allocate and then submit the 15 credits you will apply toward this salary lane change.
  3. Complete the Application for Salary Advancement in its entirety.  Make sure that the title/provider of the course that you list on the Application for Salary Advancement match the title/provider as listed on the certificate of completion or the graduate transcript.  Do not leave any sections blank, as this will slow down the review of your application.
  4. If you have questions about the salary lane application process, contact the Office of Human Resources at 630-3007.
