Navigating the College Admissions Process During Coronavirus Pandemic
There currently are many unknowns in the college admissions and application process as colleges and universities across the country respond to unprecedented circumstances as a result of the Coronavirus. A number of colleges and universities have adjusted their admissions processes and requirements and many have adopted more flexible and creative approaches to admissions. Some colleges have changed deadlines for accepting admissions. It is important to pay close attention and visit school websites to stay informed about any changes in admissions processes and requirements.
The Harrison High School counseling staff understands the heightened anxiety students and parents may be experiencing at this time. School counselors have contacted graduating seniors to discuss college selection and are available to support students and parents as they engage in the college decision-making process.
The College Board has canceled the administration of the June 3rd SAT test, and is considering alternatives to traditional SAT test administrations for students. Please visit the College Board website for the most up-to-date information.
We will monitor developments and provide updates to keep members of the graduating classes of 2020 and 2021 informed. If you have specific questions, contact your school counselor.
Class of 2020
The National Association for College Admission Counseling has developed an online reference with information about changes in college admission events, deposit dates, and more as a result of the coronavirus outbreak. The information is designed to help students navigate the college admission process during this unprecedented time. However, all information should be confirmed directly with college admissions offices.
- Check decision deadlines. Some colleges have extended the deadline for making commitment decisions.
- Confirm financial aid package. Review your financial aid information and make sure you meet the deadlines. If you have questions, call the financial aid office at the college
- Learn more about colleges where you were accepted: Do colleges offer any virtual accepted students events? Do you or your friends know students who are enrolled at colleges where you were accepted? Does the college admissions team have a blog or webinar scheduled for accepted students. Use all the virtual tools available to learn about each college or university where you were accepted, including visiting websites frequently.
- Update college acceptance decisions in Naviance.
- Make your selection. Choose the college you will attend and complete the acceptance process. Submit the deposit for only one college and notify your school counselor. According to college admission policies, you may submit a deposit to one college only.
- Celebrate - you’ll be starting college this fall. Congratulations!
Class of 2021
Your college search may be different than expected, but the high school guidance staff is prepared to support students as they begin the important process of applying to college. On Wednesday, May 20th each school counselor offered our annual College Bound day that outlines the college admissions process for 11th grade students. School counselors have thoughtfully prepared materials and resources that support the Class of 2021 during this uncertain time.
