April 21: HHS Principal's Message

Dear Parent(s)/Guardian(s),

Like you, I am becoming accustomed to a life of “social distancing.”  I work through the world of “Zoom” and “GoogleMeet,” wait in line to enter a store, stand six feet apart waiting to checkout, and wear a mask covering my mouth and nose in public.  I go on walks to get movement every day and socialize with my friends for dinner on my computer, experiencing more change in a matter of weeks than over the last years of my life. Yet, I have become accustomed to this new way of living.  It is remarkable how we can adjust to something that months ago seemed unthinkable, unimaginable, and unreasonable.

As a high school, we continue to do things differently than we have ever done in the past. Dr. Wool and I will meet with our student leadership this week to discuss how to preserve the rights of passage our students have earned and deserve.  As Dr. Wool stated in his recent message to the community, “We are determined to conclude this school year by filling it with memories both positive and unique.”

In response to these unprecedented times, we have prepared resources for college admissions as seniors continue to finalize plans for college and juniors begin the college process. Students are facing critical academic and life decisions and I am proud school counselors continue to adapt to changes and provide the support and guidance our students need.

We continue to tailor instruction delivered through the use of technology and modify practices to improve opportunities for students and teachers to remain connected. We provide two platforms: Google Hangouts and Zoom.  Google Hangouts are secured by using a Google classroom login. Zoom is now available through an established, secured district Zoom account. All students in grades 6-12 will receive a district account. Students will use the district account to access a Zoom session.  Families can access more information about the District’s Video Conferencing Guidelines.  Both platforms may be used by teachers for virtual lessons, office hours, and extra help sessions.

For families of students in grade 9, the IB Middle Years Program Personal Project has begun.  Also, take a minute to review this week’s Weekly Bulletin which includes information about scholarships available for graduating seniors.

Your children are remarkable and have adjusted to things that months ago seemed unthinkable, unimaginable, and unreasonable.

I thank you for your continued partnership.

Be well.

Sincerely,

Ms. Kimberly Beukema
Principal, Harrison High School
