Coronavirus Update May 14

Update from the Superintendent of Schools

Update: May 14 2020

The occasion is piled high with difficulty and we must rise with the occasion.
As our case is new, we must think anew and act anew.
   Abraham Lincoln

Dear Harrison Learning Community,

As we conclude week nine of Learning From Home schools are closed for the remainder of the academic year. We continue planning celebrations, graduations, and re-opening. This week each of my meetings revealed in words, demeanor, and even posture, the toll of virtual learning and social distancing on us all.

We have flattened the curve, slowed the virus, but not without emotional cost. Still, in my many meetings with the Board of Education, leadership team, teachers, students, and parents, each person has shown perseverance in confronting problems ambiguous and confounding.  While painful, the schools we knew, the experiences we knew, must now be completely reimagined... As our case is new, we must think anew and act anew.

Be assured, we are thinking and acting anew in every way; we are planning graduation ceremonies unlike any ever experienced. Because so much is unknown, we are planning virtual and in-person ceremonies...each tradition reimagined, from the mundane to the symbolic - from finding your seat to tossing your cap.

We will plan carefully for September’s reopening, but even our best planning requires us to act anew. We will plan classes differently, reconsider extracurricular activities, and even reimagine personal interactions. While extended quarantine has prepared us for some of what lies ahead, most is still uncharted.

It has been a long and trying journey for each of us, but especially for your children. Now is our opportunity to draw strength, and a wellspring of resilience from the commitment to start anew, to build something better, more beautiful, and more invulnerable for our students. The Board and I know we could have no better or more courageous partners.

Together we will think anew all that is possible…live with optimism.

Sincerely,

Louis N. Wool, Ed.D.
