June 2: LMK Principal's Message

Dear LMK Families,

I hope you enjoyed a restful weekend. During the final weeks of school, our students are completing projects and assessments. Your partnership has helped your children remain engaged throughout Learning From Home. Our work together in the last two weeks is to ensure students finish strong. The final day of school is June 16th and grades will be posted in the portal shortly after this date.

There is ample evidence that students and faculty continue to work hard and innovate.  World language students share their views on social media in Spanish. Students have been developing book talks in grade six to entice us to explore their selections. For you history buffs, 7th graders explore the issues that led to the American Civil War.  These are examples of the growth and learning taking place while Learning From Home.

Reminders/Updates:
Locker cleanout begins Wednesday, June 10 through Tuesday, June 16. At designated times, a limited number of students can retrieve their belongings from school. Please see the schedule and guidelines for this process. Students are required to wear masks and maintain social distance. Congregating among students and families will be prohibited; parents are not allowed in the building. We also will collect musical instruments and graphing calculators. These items may be left in gymnasium A and B. All 8th-grade chorus students and any 6th or 7th graders not remaining in the chorus should return their polo shirts.  We will not be collecting technology on loan from the school district (i.e. Chromebooks) except for students leaving the District.

The Governor has directed schools to remain closed for the remainder of the academic year and throughout the summer.  As the Superintendent explained in his update:  “Summer programs are being developed and will look like nothing you have ever seen or experienced before. They are not mandatory, will be flexibly scheduled, and accommodate more students than ever.” The district will be providing more information soon.

We continue to be mindful of the challenges families face Learning From Home and its impact on students’ ability to complete work. Our grading practices reflect that understanding and the approach is accurate, fair, and respectful.  The revised secondary grading guidelines ensure integrity and fairness, provide feedback on achievement, and support learning.

We are finalizing plans for our Moving Up ceremony for 8th graders.  The Superintendent and I met with 8th-grade officers to ensure a meaningful ceremony. Our class officers’ thoughtful ideas focused on their well-being, and the well-being of their teachers. We are planning for a virtual as well as on-site/virtual Moving Up. We have asked 8th-grade students to share memories to be used in a video presentation. This is the final week for 8th graders to submit their memory using this link. Yearbooks are delayed, upon arrival (it should be mid-July), a plan to gather and share them will be provided.

The District Is still providing free breakfast and lunch for eligible students. If you are currently eligible but have not yet applied, please complete the request form.  If your circumstances have changed and you are in need of food assistance contact your principal. All inquiries are confidential.

If your child needs a device, if there is a problem with your equipment, or if your family does not have internet access, the District will provide a device and/or a mobile hotspot to deliver internet access. If you require technology support please complete this form. If you have questions contact Brian Seligman (914-630-3389) or (seligmanb@harrisoncsd.org).
